New Yorkers love to say that romance blooms along the Hudson River banks, and that certainly seems true. After all, that’s where John Shults and Joy Morrow-Nulton live and met. The widowed 94-year-olds didn’t know the pandemic would end up bringing them a new relationship. Now, their future is looking better than ever, especially after the two of them received their coronavirus vaccines, keeping themselves and everyone around them safe and sound.

Although they are vaccinated now, the two older lovers had to separate for all of 2020. Still, now that they’re back together, Shults and Morrow-Nulton don’t regret a thing. “She was worth it. It was a pain in the neck, though,” Shults said. His son Pete said they used the internet daily, messaging and calling to ensure that they never lost touch. “They’d find a way to get together. They did whatever it took,” he revealed. Now, at long last, John Shults and Joy Morrow-Nulton have reunited!

In the past few months, due to COVID, Shults and Morrow-Nulton have spent their time driving to see beautiful places together, playing with balloons, and talking all night long. Shults also loves to joke that Morrow-Nulton has also become something of a sugar mama! “She’s richer than I am, just so you know. She bought me a walker,” he said. “$159, I think. I told you she had money. She did have it until she bought my walker,” he explained.

Shults didn’t lose the little present fight, though, buying Morrow-Nulton something to put on her finger. He had to ask a few times before she decided to say yes. It all came down to the couple missing each other all the time. “When we had snow days and I didn’t come up , I missed him. Finally, I said, OK,” she said. “ going to be at the end of March or beginning of April.” And what a wedding it will be…

Now that Shults and Morrow-Nulton are officially marrying, many of their family members are happy to know the 94-year-olds have found true love. “We were just saying, like reminiscing, on that it was emotional because we’ve been so careful around them, and just how important it is to get the vaccine and, you know, what it means to everyone surrounding them, as well,” says Emily Loughran, Shults’ granddaughter.

It’s been a very emotional year for everyone, so New York wanted to show off Shults and Morrow-Nulton as a beacon of hope. State Senator Michelle Hinchey handed Shults and Morrow-Nulton their vaccine certificate! “We have had such a challenging year and to be here for a moment like this is so special and uplifting, you can feel it. You can feel the happiness that people have,” Hinchey said.

The 94-year-olds feel ecstatic about living life now that they are vaccinated. “Being able to not be so fearful everywhere we go, although we will be careful,” Morrow-Nulton said. “I’m looking forward to getting married to my wonderful woman,” said Shults.
